La Palma
: At the northwest of the Canary Islands, some hundred miles from the coast of Africa is the island of La Palma, also known as La Isla Bonita, because of its astonishing natural beauty.

La Palma is one of the smaller of the Canary islands, with a surface area of 706 square kilometres and a population of no more than 80,000. It is unusual in that it rises remarkably steeply from the ocean, the whole central mountain range exceeds 2000 m in altitude. The highest point on the island is the Roque de los Muchachos, the setting of the astronomical observatory.

La Palma lies in both the cool north-easterly Canary Island current and the north-easterly trade winds, giving it a sunny climate with year-round modest temperatures, rather cooler than would be expected given the latitude of the island.

Rainfall levels vary considerably across the island. The prevailing north-easterly trade winds bring moisture down to the Canaries, and the high altitude of the island means that most of this is deposited to the north-east. The southern part of the island is fairly dry and sunny. This gives rise to dramatic differences in vegetation, from the lush forests at Los Tilos and Marcos y Corderos in the north of the island, to the vine-clad slopes of Fuencaliente in the South.

There is a considerable seasonal variation in rainfall, with almost no rain from June to August, and a peak in November. Average sea-level temperatures vary from 22º in August to 15º in January . Temperatures drop substantially with altitude; typical temperatures at El Roque de los Muchachos vary from 18º in summer to 3 C in winter, with a typical daily range of 7º.

La Palma is occassionally affected by winds from the Sahara desert, bringing very fine clouds of dust in suspension ('calima'). The months most affected are July and August.

Santa Cruz de La Palma’s airport code is SPC, and should not be confused with either Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (LPA), or Santa Cruz (possibly more than one in the Americas).

La Palma is a holidays destination so please book your air flights well in advance, especially during peak periods such as Easter and Christmas when flights are greatly booked.
